The term cataract refers to a cloudy lens within the eye. When a cataract is removed, an artificial lens is placed inside the eye to take the place of the human lens that has become the cataract.

Signals that cataracts may be forming:

  • Vision becomes cloudy
  • Colors are not as vivid
  • Glare of oncoming headlights when driving at night
  • You may experience double vision
  • General change in your prescription

Take our self evaluation test to the left of this page. If you are 60 years or older, and you realize that you are experiencing any symptoms of cataracts, it is important that you have an eye exam from one of the experienced physicians at Windward Eye Center or Alpharetta Eye Clinic. With a simple eye exam, you will know for sure whether cataracts are what is causing your changes in vision and any vision problems. The doctor will then explain what corrective procedures can be undertaken to help.

What is Your Vision Like When You Have Cataracts?

Developing a cataract is a natural part of the aging eye. Most everyone will develop cataracts in their lifetime. Most often it occurs in those 65 and up.

Since they are a progressive, painless clouding of the natural, internal lens of the eye, they can sneak up on you. You think your eye sight is fine but upon examination you find it has deteriorated. Cataracts block light, making it difficult to see clearly. Like our cloudy day image, it can seem like there are clouds restricting your vision. Once the cataracts are replaced with IOL, colors become more vivid, vision is clear once again!

Treating Cataracts

The decision to treat a cataract is reached by one of our expert optometrists and the patient together. This decision is based on the degree to which the cataract is impairing vision and the effect of the impairment on the patient’s quality of life.

IOL technology has evolved rapidly during the last decade, and cataract patients may wish to discuss with your optometrist the many options available. All types of IOLs offer improved vision after cataract surgery.
